Read on to learn the top five factors to consider when it’s time to shop for new and used boats!

1. New vs. Used

You’ll first want to decide whether you want to purchase a new or used boat. If you have a high budget and know you’ll be using the boat for years to come, new is the best option because of the warranties they come with. On the other hand, when you’re comparing boat prices a used boat is a far more economical choice.

2. What Do You Want?

Next, you’ll want to be clear with yourself about why you want a boat along with your main uses for it. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

How often will I use it?  How many passengers does it need to carry?  Will it need to go on a boat trailer?  Do I need a multipurpose boat?  Am I using it for water sports, fishing, or cruising?

You can see how the answers to these questions may drastically change the size and type of boat you purchase. For instance, if you want to cruise and start hosting boat parties, you’ll need to purchase a larger boat that can comfortably carry multiple people.

3. Boating Costs

Now that you have a better idea of the kind of boat you need, you’ll need to be clear about your budget and additional boating costs. For instance, smaller boats are typically more affordable because you won’t be paying as much for insurance, fuel, and storage. You’ll also want to consider the additional accessories for your boat that you want. Accessories such as audio packages, towers, and board racks can add up, but they can also give you a far more enjoyable experience on the water.

4. Boat Inspection

Once you’ve narrowed down your list of boats, it’s important that you’re able to see them, inspect them, and try them out before making a purchase. Even if a boat looks great online or on paper, you may not have the same excitement once you see it in person.  You can view many popular boat brands and types at boat shows. If you’re looking at a used boat sold by a private owner, you’ll want to make sure they’ll allow you to take a look at it and take it out on the water.

5. Read the Fine Print

If you’re purchasing a new boat, it’s important that you take the time to read the fine print. For instance, pay attention to everything that’s included with your purchase of a boat, as all the best boat features and accessories that a dealership is showing may not be available at the price point you’re looking at.
